# Why was the Higg Index developed?

The Higg Index was developed in response to many factors, including:

* The **growing demand for sustainability** in the fashion industry.
* The need for a **standardized** way to **measure sustainability performance**.
* The **lack of data and transparency** in the fashion industry.

The Higg Index helps address these challenges by providing a standardized framework for measuring sustainability performance and collecting and sharing data on the environmental and social impacts of textile and footwear products.
